Operatives of the State Security Service have arrested one Ekundayo Anjorin at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, while allegedly attempting to collect about 50,000 fake blank drivers’ licences.
A statement by the Assistant Route Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission, Ijeoma Nwachi, said the cards were imported from China.
It said the blank licences in several cartons had arrived the country aboard Lufthansa German Airline Flight LH 564 as unacompanied luggage from China via Frankfurt and addressed to one Bayo Hassan.
It said Hassan had earlier been arrested while attempting to collect five cartons of the said luggage. Bayo
Hazzan and one Jude Chukwuleta, earlier arrested by the SSS and handed over to the FRSC, were charged to court by the police.
They were said to be in possession of 3,586 blank licences and were arraigned on July 31, 2008 at the Magistrate’s Court 4, Ikeja Judicial Division/Magistrate District.
They were reportedly granted bail, but instead of stopping the illegal act, Anjorin and the accused persons allegedly devised other methods of carrying out the practice.
The statement added that Anjorin and the exhibits had been handed over to the police for further investigation.
It said the Lagos Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Kayode Olagunju, had assured the public that the commission in collaboration with other security agencies would continue to identify the soruces of fake driver’s licences and arrest the perpetrators.
